What makes a fear a phobia?

A phobia involves fear or anxiety that is intense, persistent, connected to a particular object or situation, and often accompanied by avoidance. It is different from an ordinary dislike or a momentary fright because it can interfere with daily functioning.

You do not need to remember a dramatic event for your fear to be real. Some phobias develop without one obvious cause.

Your fear may be intense, but it does not make you broken.
